Developed for the Korean War, the M1951 field coat was made from OG-107 water repellent and wind resistant sateen and had a zip front closure and summary cuffs. It had both waist and hem drawstrings and in cold weather could be fitted with a detachable liner. A hood could be summaryed to the coat’s epaulets to provide protection against the elements for both head and face. Though they were rarely needed in Vietnam, field coats were worn in the Central Highlands where it became rather cold at night.

The 1st Cavalry Division (“First Team”) is a combined arms division and is one of the most decorated combat divisions of the United States Army. It is based at Fort Hood, Texas. It was formed in 1921 and served during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War, with the Stabilization Force in Bosnia-Herzegovina, in the Iraq War, in the War in Afghanistan and in Operation Freedom’s Sentinel. As of October 2017, the 1st Cavalry Division is subordinate to III Corps and is commanded by Major General Jeffery D. Broadwater.

The 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized)—nicknamed the “Red Diamond”, or the “Red Devils” —was an infantry division of the United States Army that served in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War, and with NATO and the U.S. Army III Corps. It was disbanded and deactivated on 24 November 1992.
